The High Organizing Committee for the Tripoli, Capital of Arab Media 2022 Ceremony, awarded the "Al-Saraya Al-Hamra" award for freedom of the press to the late Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot dead by the Israeli occupation forces on May 11, 2022.
The announcement of the award came at the conclusion of the ceremony held in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Saturday in the presence of the Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.
The decision to grant the award was unanimously issued in honor of Abu Akleh so that the first annual session of the award bears the name of the martyred journalist, according to the committee.
Dbeibah received ministers and senior media officials of the member states of the Arab League after their meeting at the Rixos Halls Complex in Tripoli as part of the conclusion of the ceremony of "Tripoli: The capital of Arab media 2022."
On Saturday morning, the Arab Ministers of Media meeting began at the Rixos Halls Complex in Tripoli, during which the Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Head of the Media and Communication Sector, Ambassador Ahmed Khattabi, thanked the Libyan organizing parties for the holding of the event, congratulating Tripoli for being the capital of Arab media."
The Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs of the Government of National Unity, Walid Ellafi, called for coordinating Arab positions to solve decades-old problems, while the Arab Media Ministers agreed during the meeting on the need to support the Palestinian cause by preserving Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine and the permanent capital of Arab media.
Khattabi said that the Libyan side “proposed a plan to support the Palestinian cause and preserve Jerusalem, which is the permanent capital of Arab media.”
"The Libyan side submitted proposals that include setting up a mechanism to combat terrorism and destructive phenomena, and discussing the best methods for the mechanisms of the Arab media honor charter.”
