A police officer has been killed in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, during protests demanding the resignation of the internationally recognised Government of National Unity (GNU) .
According to an official statement, the officer was shot by unidentified gunmen while guarding the Prime Minister’s headquarters. He later died from his injuries.
The government blamed the violence on armed infiltrators within the crowd of demonstrators, accusing them of exploiting the protests to incite unrest and advance political agendas.
"Some armed individuals embedded among the demonstrators carried out acts of violence in an attempt to stir chaos and serve the interests of certain political factions," the statement said.
Footage and alleged confessions from several armed protesters were published by a government-affiliated platform, showing their involvement in an attack on the government building on Sikka Road. Authorities said efforts are under way to gather further evidence and arrest those responsible for the disorder on Saturday night.
The protests, followed the government's announcement of a plan to dismantle armed militias in Tripoli and bring them under the command of a unified national army.
No details have been released on arrests or potential suspects, but officials say investigations are ongoing.
