Saddam Haftar, son of Khalifa Haftar, met with US presidential advisor Massad Boulos at the US State Department in Washington. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Tim Lenderking and US Special Envoy to Libya Richard Norland.
According to a statement published Tuesday by the US Embassy in Libya on its X account, the meeting took place Monday, with Saddam Haftar leading a delegation as the “envoy of the General Commander of the Libyan National Army.”
The statement noted that the parties agreed that “a secure, unified, and prosperous Libya, with strong technocratic institutions—including the National Oil Corporation and the Central Bank of Libya—would be better positioned to engage with the United States and US companies.”
The embassy added that the United States will continue engaging officials from both western and eastern Libya and support Libyan efforts to unify their military institutions while safeguarding national sovereignty.
Saddam Haftar’s trip to Washington followed the recent visit of the US Navy’s USS Mount Whitney, the flagship of the Sixth Fleet, to Libya. The vessel docked in both Tripoli and Benghazi, where meetings were held with local authorities focused on enhancing military cooperation and supporting efforts to reunify Libya’s armed forces.
