The UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman has conveyed the UN Secretary General’s commitment to support and end Libya’s transition once and for all towards stable and effective institutions in Libya, reported the UNSMIL on twitter Wednesday after Feltman had arrived in Tripoli and met with the Head of the Presidential Council (PC), Fayez Al-Sirraj.

Attending the meeting was also the Head of the UNSMIL Ghassan Salame and other officials from the UN and the PC.

According to a tweet by the UNSMIL, Al-Sirraj extended an invitation to the Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, to visit Libya, saying it would send a positive message and give hope that a solution is in the horizon.

“The UN will provide Libya with the technical support needed to hold the elections as per the request of the Presidential Council.” Feltman said in a joint presser with the Libyan deputy foreign minister Lutfi Al-Maghrabi and Salame.

He also stressed that the UN Secretary General renewed commitment to supporting the UN action plan to see Libya going into elections in 2018.

“The UN supports holding constitution referendum with respect to the sovereignty of Libya so that a political solution is reached. I will meet with Mr. Guterres this weekend and inform him of the talks with Mr. Al-Serraj.” Feltman remarked.

He reiterated that the UN is ready to support the elections process as per the request of the Libyan government, adding that the drafting of the Libyan institution is a Libyan sovereign issue.

“The constitution issue must be solved as per the political accord that is needed by all Libyans.” He explained.
