The Joint Truce Committee, established by the Presidential Council and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), held its first meeting on Tuesday at the Abu Sitta Naval Base. The session was chaired by Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Haddad.

The committee operates as part of ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions, prevent the resurgence of armed conflict in Tripoli and surrounding areas, and ensure the protection of civilians, according to a statement posted by UNSMIL on Facebook.

UNSMIL reiterated the UN Security Council’s concerns over reports of civilian casualties during last week’s clashes, as well as the use of force against demonstrators.

The mission emphasized its continued call for all parties to refrain from violence and to engage in dialogue, urging accountability for those responsible for violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, and for non-compliance with the ceasefire.

The committee plans to submit regular reports on the status of the ceasefire and the security situation on the ground to the Presidential Council, in its capacity as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and to UNSMIL.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense of the Government of National Unity stressed that efforts to uphold the ceasefire remain stable, in coordination with all regular military institutions.

In its statement, the ministry stressed that civilian protection and securing key areas are top priorities, calling on media outlets to uphold professional responsibility and refrain from spreading misinformation.
