US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff said Thursday that Washington “will achieve success in Libya, and you’ll hear about it soon.”
According to The Atlantic, which interviewed Witkoff, the envoy is more soft-spoken than President Donald Trump but equally prone to using grandiose language. The American magazine cited Witkoff saying: “We’re going to have success in Syria; you’ll hear about it very quickly. We’re going to have success in Libya; you’re going to hear it quickly.”
A few days ago, Trump’s advisor Massad Boulos revealed a US proposal to resolve the Libyan crisis, calling for inclusive participation from all Libyan parties without exclusion. He noted that Washington is working to persuade the parties to come to the negotiating table and relaunch the stalled political process.
The US official stressed that Washington will not allow the current political deadlock to persist, adding: “This American move reflects a commitment to Libya’s stability and the interests of its people.”
Meanwhile, the US plan announced in early May to deport high-profile migrants to Libya has sparked widespread controversy — despite denials from both the Government of National Unity and the rival eastern-based government. A US judge has since blocked the deportation move.
