The United Kingdom (UK) has called in a tweet posted by the UK embassy in Libya on Saturday for an immediate end to violence in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and condemned any attempts to take or maintain power through force, saying the protection of civilians is paramount.
Relevantly, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) issued a statement, saying it was deeply concerned about ongoing armed clashes including indiscriminate medium and heavy shelling in civilian-populated neighborhoods in Tripoli, which had reportedly caused civilian casualties and damage to civilian facilities including hospitals.
The UN also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Tripoli and reminded all Libyan parties of their obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law to protect civilians and civilian objects. It also said that it was imperative that all parties would refrain from using any form of hate speech and incitement to violence.
Meanwhile, the United States (US) said on Twitter that it was very concerned about violent clashes in Tripoli with reports of civilian casualties and property destruction, adding that Washington stands with the Libyan people in calling for peaceful dialogue.
Heavy clashes broke out Saturday dawn in downtown Tripoli neighborhoods - and mater in the day in Bridge 17 and Gebis Checkpoint -, leaving deaths and injuries as well as lots of material damage in public and private properties.
