The UN-backed committee of Libyan experts has finalised a set of proposals aimed at overcoming long-standing disputes in the country’s electoral framework, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has announced.

The Advisory Committee, formed on 4 February under UN Security Council Resolution 2755 (2024), concluded its work after more than 20 sessions held in Tripoli and Benghazi. The 20-member panel consulted widely, including with Libya’s High National Election Commission and the “6+6” Committee, which drafted the country’s electoral laws in 2023.

UNSMIL said the group’s proposals are undergoing final edits and will be made public in due course. The mission praised the committee’s professionalism and described the outcome as a “useful contribution” to efforts aimed at ending Libya’s prolonged political transition and unifying state institutions.

The UN mission will now begin consultations with Libyan stakeholders and civil society, aiming to shape a consensus-based roadmap to national elections. “It is time to put the interests of the Libyan people first,” UNSMIL said in a statement.
