The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has confirmed it is maintaining ongoing communication with both local parties and international partners to address the escalating violence in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
In a statement released this morning, UNSMIL reiterated its strong backing for mediation efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions in the city, which has seen a significant surge in violence over recent days. The mission also highlighted the rapid mobilisation of forces in other regions of the country, further fueling concerns about the spread of conflict.
UNSMIL condemned the recent escalation in the strongest terms, warning that the situation could quickly spiral out of control unless swift actions are taken to restore stability.
The mission expressed grave concern over reports of civilian casualties, calling for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire in all areas of conflict. It further urged the creation of safe corridors to evacuate civilians trapped in high-risk zones.
The UN also reminded all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law, stressing the need to protect civilians and engage in serious, good-faith dialogue to resolve the ongoing conflict peacefully.
In its statement, the mission made it clear that targeting civilians or endangering their lives, as well as attacking civilian infrastructure, could constitute war crimes under international law, with those responsible facing accountability.
