Libya’s ambassador to the United Nations has warned that uncontrolled parallel government spending is worsening economic instability and could deepen political divisions.
Addressing the UN Security Council (UNSC), Taher El-Sunni urged international backing for a unified financial plan and called for an end to external interference in Libya’s affairs.
El-Sunni welcomed the work of the UN’s advisory committee but insisted any political roadmap must be inclusive, transparent, and supported by all domestic parties. He also appealed to UN Envoy Hanna Tetteh to accelerate efforts in setting a clear and realistic timeline for the political process.
The ambassador cautioned that unregulated financial practices, particularly parallel budgets run by rival authorities, threaten Libya’s economic recovery and could spark further unrest.
He said Libya needs a genuine international partnership “based on support, not imposition or theory,” and stressed that solutions must come from Libyan consensus rather than foreign imposition.
El-Sunni also reiterated the urgent need to unify the country’s fragmented security institutions, warning that the lack of central military leadership leaves Libya vulnerable to terrorism, human trafficking, and foreign interference.
He urged continued support for the Joint Military Committee, which has previously brokered critical security agreements, and called for renewed efforts to end the presence of foreign forces on Libyan soil.
