The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Monday called for calm in response to “reports of military buildup and rising tensions in Tripoli and the wider western region.”
In a statement posted on its official X account, UNSMIL said it was closely monitoring these reports, urging all parties to “immediately de-escalate the situation, refrain from any provocative actions, and resolve disputes through dialogue.”
UNSMIL expressed its support for Libyan efforts — including those led by community elders and local leaders — to reach a peaceful resolution, emphasizing the critical responsibility of all parties to protect civilians.
Meanwhile, several neighborhoods in Tripoli have witnessed what has been described as suspicious military movements, amid expectations of potential clashes at any moment. This comes against the backdrop of dissatisfaction among some armed groups recently pushed out of Tripoli over the conduct of forces currently in control of state institutions, according to their opponents.
Local social media pages reported the presence of armed groups across various streets in Tripoli in recent hours. These pages also indicated the arrival of convoys from Al-Zawiya, Zintan, and Misrata to the capital — apparently in preparation for clashes with forces stationed inside the city, particularly those led by Abdel Ghani al-Kikli, known as “Ghneiwa.”
