The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has urged the Libyan authorities to allocate necessary resources to facilitate the following stages of municipal elections. This appeal comes as the mission welcomed the completion of the first phase of voter registration for the municipal council elections.

In a statement released Tuesday, UNSMIL congratulated the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) on successfully registering 210,545 voters across 60 municipalities despite the challenging conditions.

UNSMIL praised the commitment of Libyans who have registered to vote, reaffirming their dedication to choosing their local leaders.

The mission further encouraged all registered voters to verify the accuracy of their registration details when the preliminary lists are published from July 21 for three days.

It also urged the authorities to ensure the provision of resources needed for the subsequent steps in the municipal electoral process. Additionally, UNSMIL encouraged the HNEC and other institutions to continue promoting women's participation, which currently stands at 29% of the registered voters, to ensure a more inclusive democratic process.

In its concluding remarks, UNSMIL reiterated its commitment to supporting both municipal and national elections in Libya, enabling Libyans to freely and securely elect their leaders and renew the legitimacy of their institutions.
