The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) organized a workshop on October 30-31 to boost civil society’s role in Libya’s upcoming municipal elections.
Held in collaboration with the Ministries of Interior and Youth, the High National Elections Commission, and numerous civil society groups, the workshop aimed to enhance community participation and support for the election process.
With over 50 participants, including government officials, women’s groups, youth associations, and representatives from Benghazi, the workshop addressed ways to safeguard electoral integrity, encourage voter awareness, and foster collaboration.
UNSMIL’s Security Sector Reform Officer, Sonya Malki, emphasized the importance of civil society’s role in election integrity, particularly in mobilizing voters and ensuring a secure and transparent voting process.
Badr Al-Harithi, Head of Security Institutions at the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), remarked on the progress Libya’s civil society organizations have made in understanding and engaging with the security sector.
Al-Harithi noted that these organizations are increasingly serving as intermediaries between local communities and security institutions, emphasizing their role in strengthening community involvement in the election process.
