UNSMIL’s Director of Human Rights, Rule of Law and Transitional Justice, Suki Nagra, met with the Abu Salim Victims’ Association on Thursday to discuss victim-centered transitional justice measures and national calls for accountability for the brutal 1996 mass killing of more than 1,200 detainees in Abu Salim prison.

UNSMIL reiterated that ensuring accountability for this crime against humanity is critical for rights-based national reconciliation and to send a clear message to human rights violators in the fight against impunity in Libya.

Tripoli Appeals Court ruled in mid-June that it was not competent to tackle the proceedings of Abu Salim massacre, sending the case to military judiciary. The judge said the case was a military one as a number of military officers were involved in the massacre.
