The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said it had facilitated preliminary consultations with 14 independent Libyan financial and economic experts from across the country.
UNSMIL said its facilitation of these consultations aligns with Security Council resolutions 2755 (2024) and 2542 (2020), mandating the Mission to help Libya to "consolidate the governance, security, and economic arrangements, including support for economic reform in collaboration with international financial institutions."
Discussions, held on 10 and 11 February, focused on guiding principles for economic policies that address the root causes of conflict, enhance governance, and promote accountability. Participants explored priorities for stabilizing and diversifying Libya’s economy, for instilling good governance, and practical steps that can be realistically implemented in Libya’s political and economic environment in the short, medium and long-term.
"Participants also recognized the critical need for greater public engagement in support of economic reforms and on the need to address the immediate gap in spending and revenues due to the absence of a balanced, unified budget law that is enforceable and subject to robust oversight." UNSMIL explained.
