AFRICOM

The US Embassy in Libya announced that the recent visit by a high-level delegation from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) was aimed at reinforcing efforts to unify Libya's divided military and safeguard the country's sovereignty.

Led by AFRICOM Deputy Commander Lieutenant General John Brennan, the delegation visited Tripoli, Benghazi, and Sirte from February 3 to 6. Brennan was accompanied by AFRICOM’s Director of Security Cooperation, Brigadier General Rose Keravuori, and US Chargé d'Affaires to Libya, Jeremy Berndt.

The embassy stressed that unifying Libya’s military institutions is vital for the country's stability, highlighting that promoting peace and stability remains a cornerstone of US national security policy in the region.

During the visit, the delegation met with key Libyan officials, including Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, Chief of Staff Mohammed al-Haddad, Deputy Defence Minister Abdelsalam Zoubi, and National Security Advisor Ibrahim Dbeibah. Discussions focused on enhancing military cooperation and training.

In a notable meeting, the US officials also held talks with Saddam Haftar, son of Khalifa Haftar, to 'explore avenues for deepening US-Libya security cooperation' and supporting the unification of the country's military and security institutions.
