The US Assistant Secretary of the State Department, Barbra Leaf, said Washington opposes any steps by any party that might lead to escalating violence as key Libyan actors and international partners intensify efforts to restore momentum toward early elections.

Leaf's remarks came in a meeting with Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Al-Mangoush, as they discussed full support for the UN process.

In the meantime, Al-Mangoush stressed the rejection of any reasons that plunge Libya into a state of political division, saying that the efforts of the Government of National Unity to impose security and renounce violence in all its forms are ongoing, in addition to continuous work to hold elections that would achieve the aspirations of the Libyan people as soon as possible.

She hailed the American role in supporting stability in Libya, and its backing for the international position in favor of elections as the only solution to the Libyan crisis, urging for selecting a representative for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya that serves the required tasks and has experience in the Libyan file.
