The regional spokesman for the US State Department, Samuel Warburg, has urged Libyan parties to search for solutions and set standards for holding elections, saying that 80% of Libyans want to see an electoral process.

Talking to the Egyptian newspaper Akhbar El-Youm, Warburg added that the Libyan issue is also crucial for Egypt. "There are no discussions about Libya in which the Egyptian side does not participate," the US official said, reaffirming that his country has been and will continue contact with Egypt in this regard.

In response to a question about the agreements signed between the Government of National Unity and regional countries, the American spokesman said that he cannot talk about the legitimacy of the agreements as it is a legal issue.

However, Warburg cited that such agreements "were not in the interest of the Libyan people,” referring to the memorandum of understanding that Libya signed with Turkey on the exploration for oil and gas.

"The Libyan people must choose the government that will implement any international agreements," he said, adding that the international community is aware that currently, Libya has no government, apparatus, or institution elected by the Libyans.

Regarding the reopening of the US embassy in Tripoli, Warburg indicated that this is related to specific circumstances, as the security conditions "are not appropriate" now due to some internal affairs, including the dispute over elections, the government, and state institutions.
