Regional spokesperson of the United States (US) Department of State, Hala Ghrait, has told Al-Ittihad newspaper that there is no military solution for the crisis in Libya, reiterating support for the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement signed in Geneva in October 2020.

The US spokeswoman added in the interview with the Emirati newspaper the only way forward for the political process in Libya is through a credible roadmap that allows Libyans to have the final say regarding their leadership, which requires constitutional basis for elections.

She also remarked that the US had encouraged the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Abdoulaye Bathily, to prioritize efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in the institutions of the Libyan state.

The spokeswoman added that Washington also encouraged the work of the United Nations Ceasefire Monitoring Mission, as it assists the Libyan 5+5 Joint Military Commission in overseeing the implementation of the peace process and the immediate withdrawal of all foreign forces, fighters and mercenaries.
