World Food Program (WFP) distributed last December more than 235 metric tonnes of food as part of its emergency response to Sudanese refugees in Libya, reaching more than 31,000 people across the country. In addition, 3,180 children and 1,396 breastfeeding women received nutritional support as part of WFP's malnutrition prevention initiatives.
As part of its support to Libyan host communities, WFP also provided cash-based transfers to 3,604 vulnerable families in refugee hosting areas in Al-Zawiya and Sabha, totalling $40,425. In addition, WFP, in collaboration with LibAid, provided emergency food assistance to some 700 flood-affected people in Ajdabiya and the Benghazi area following the heavy rainfall.
Looking ahead, WFP is scaling up its support to meet escalating needs in 2025 and ensure the continued delivery of life-saving assistance, with food distributions currently underway in all regions of Libya.
Also in last December, the World Health Organization office in Libya announced the arrival of support from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department to support the health needs of Sudanese refugees in Al-Kufra municipality in southeastern Libya.
A delegation from UN agencies had previously visited Al-Kufra municipality, led by UNSMIL's Acting Head Stephanie Koury. During the visit, the UN delegation held talks with local officials to assess the ongoing humanitarian response to Sudanese refugees.
