Dignitaries and elders of Zawiya city west of Tripoli have emphasized in a statement their commitment to building a civil state based on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power.

The statement underlined the rejection of Zawiya city to the military rule and an authoritarian state and their full support to build the military and security establishments on a professional basis and under a civil authority.

They also urged all Libyans to stand united and advance their national reconciliation, calling on the international community to respect the aspirations of Libyans to live and exercise their right to a referendum on the constitution and to select who should govern them through free and fair elections.

The statement further called on the UN mission to be neutral on all sides, stressing condemnation to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the burning of homes, the displacement of civilians, the imprisonment of innocents, and targeted killings.

They also stressed their adherence to the unity of Libyan soil and the sovereignty of the homeland, reaffirming their total repudiation of foreign interference in internal affairs.

Dignitaries of the western region issued a statement at their meeting last Sunday in the city of Zuwara in which they recorded their refusal to the military rule and not to let anyone use the western region to attack another party.
