The Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Rizdon Zeninga, has stressed the jurisdiction of the High Court as a sovereign institution in reactivating the Constitutional Chamber, underscoring the importance of preserving independence and unity of the judiciary.

This came during Zeninga's meeting with the President of the High Court, Mohamed Al-Hafi, Wednesday, who briefed him on the history of the Constitutional Chamber of the High Court and the recent decision by the General Assembly to reactivate the chamber.

UNSMIL reported that Zeninga emphasized the need that the judiciary is able to resolve all disputes within its jurisdiction, including constitutional and legal challenges in a timely manner, and to protect people's rights and freedoms.

The General Assembly of the High Court decided unanimously, on Thursday, to reactivate the Constitutional Chamber to consider and rule on appeals.

The decision delivered by the President of the High Court, Mohamed Al-Hafi, stated that the Court "vows to the Libyans that it will not take sides with any of the parties and will uphold the status of the country and the established constitutional principles and rules."

The Constitutional Chamber is the competent authority to adjudicate cases and appeals that have a constitutional and legal aspect.

It is also competent to rule on disputes over laws, legislation, and decisions issued by the executive and legislative authorities, and adjudicating appeals against the constitutional declaration, according to its founding law.
