Al-Sweihli achieved an unprecedented historic milestone by winning the 46th edition of the African Volleyball Club Championship, which concluded on Tuesday at the Misrata Sports Hall.
Al-Sweihli was crowned champion after defeating one of the giants of African volleyball, Tunisia’s Espérance, in a thrilling final match that ended 3 sets to 2.
Libya’s champions made a comeback after trailing two sets to one (25-21, 23-25, 25-21), winning the decisive fourth and fifth sets with continuous support from their fans (25-21, 15-11).
This marks the first-ever African volleyball title for Libya, after previous near successes, including Al-Ahly Tripoli’s third-place finishes in 2008, 2013, and 2019.
Following the match, Al-Sweihli was awarded the championship by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh. The team will now represent the African continent in the Club World Championship in Brazil. Meanwhile, Egypt’s Al-Ahly secured third place after defeating Rwanda’s Army team in straight sets.
