Interior Minister Imad Al-Trabelsi has called on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to assist in efforts to repatriate irregular migrants through the Voluntary Return Program.
The appeal came during a meeting in Tripoli between Al-Trabelsi and UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, along with her delegation, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry.
Discussions focused on security challenges and the ministry’s progress in implementing its security strategy. The minister also warned of the wider implications of irregular migration on Libya and Mediterranean countries, stressing the importance of international support in managing the issue.
Libya remains a major transit point for migrants, with authorities facing increasing pressure to control migration flows to Europe.
