The United Nations Security Council has approved an extension of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until October 31, 2025, following the expiration of its previous mandate on January 31.
During a Security Council session on Wednesday, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, provided an update on Libya’s political, economic, and security situation. She emphasized the need for continued international support to stabilize the country.
Hanna Tetteh, the newly appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of UNSMIL, is set to assume her duties in the coming days.
DiCarlo stated that UNSMIL aims to organize a national dialogue involving key Libyan stakeholders to advance political reconciliation.
