Security and military representatives from Libya’s east and west have agreed to set up a research centre specializing in border security, the UN mission has said.

The deal was reached on 26 February between border security, counterterrorism, and migration officials, including two female officers from the police and army.

The agreement follows a two-day meeting in Tunisia, organized by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The newly proposed centre aims to provide risk analysis and practical security solutions, with a defined structure and responsibilities.

A participant in the talks said the initiative would help improve border security, combat terrorism, and tackle irregular migration. The UN also facilitated a visit to a Tunisian border post to enhance knowledge-sharing on regional security threats.
