In a separate development, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed a visit by the country’s Attorney General to Benghazi to investigate the disappearance of Ibrahim al-Darsi, a member of the Libyan House of Representatives.
Mr Darsi has been missing since 18 May 2024, after publicly criticising the concentration of power among the sons of eastern commander Khalifa Haftar.
UNSMIL said it hoped the investigation would help uncover Mr Darsi’s fate and ensure accountability for his disappearance. The mission called for full transparency and cooperation from authorities, adding it was prepared to support the investigation and help answer "the legitimate questions" raised by Mr Darsi’s family.
Last week, distressing footage was leaked online showing Mr Darsi shackled and in underwear inside a detention cell, reportedly filmed six days after his abduction.
Rights groups have long accused armed factions in Libya, particularly in the east, of operating with impunity in the face of growing reports of arbitrary arrests, torture, and enforced disappearances.
