Sources have reported that several elected mayors refused to attend the first meeting of the municipalities of Libya to be held in Shahat town, east of the country, on January 22-23.
The sources explained that the refusal was due to the mayors’ unwillingness to sit with non-elected persons who were appointed by the military governor of the eastern region.
The mayors stressed their adherence to the democratic process and their solidarity with their elected counterparts who have been dismissed by force.
The Municipality of Shahat said on Saturday that over 40 mayors and members of municipal councils had arrived in the town on board a National Oil Corporation plane in order to take part in the meeting.
