The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Politics, Mohamed Khalil, had called for the activation of the provisions of the “quartet agreement” concluded between Libya, Chad, Niger and Sudan in May of 2018, with a view to securing all common borders.
This came during Khalil’s attendance at a meeting held by the African Peace and Security Council, at its headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, through video call to discuss border strategy of the African Union (AU).
Khalil stressed the necessity for African cooperation and integration through the Continental Free Trade Area, in order to reduce the flow of illegal immigration, noting that the lack of security along the borders hampers legitimate commercial activities, which tend to be replaced by illegal activities, depriving local communities of economic and social benefits.
