The Libyan Wildlife Trust has warned of the heavy oil leaking from some rusty tanks in the West Tripoli power station, raising concern that it could lead to an "environmental catastrophe."

In a statement on Facebook, the group indicated that a stream of oil had already made its way to the nearby shores, with the authorities doing nothing to halt it.

"The problem exceeded two weeks, and to date, the competent authorities took no measures to confront this disaster," the statement read.

Oil leakage could cause pollution that harms air quality and contributes to climate change, warn experts.
