The Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sirraj accused House of Representatives of hindering the founding of a constitutional basis for the upcoming elections in Libya.
In a meeting in Tunisia on Wednesday, when Al-Sirraj met with the representatives of China, US, UK, Germany, France, Russia, Italy, and the UNSMIL’s Head, and EU’s head of delegation to Libya, Al-Sirraj reaffirmed that parliamentary and presidential elections will be held in the same time, saying there is a need to end the continuous hindrances of the HoR for founding a constitutional basis.
“Contradictions by regional and western countries add to the chaos in Libya and the hindering parties are taking advantage of that. Some countries are taking sides with some parties over the others in Libya and some others are providing weapons to certain sides of the conflict despite the UN ban on arms exports to Libya. We need a unified international stance to end the current push for division in Libya.” Al-Sirraj explained.
“Every time we move one step forward, they push us backward.” He added, referring to the latest agreement in Paris, which was not respected by all parties, according to his media office.
“some of those who attended the Paris conference dealt loosely with the commitments made in there and some of the commitments were violated such as the acts carried out in the oil terminals.” He added, referring to what Khalifa Haftar did in the oil crescent recently, without saying his name.
Haftar handed over the oil crescent region’s control to the parallel National Oil Corporation late in June before he backed away and returned the control to the internationally recognized Tripoli-based state oil firm.
“We have grown impatient of the international community’s double standards policy as Libyans have lost trust in it more than ever.” Al-Sirraj indicated.
Libyan rivals agreed on holding elections on December 10 this year with a constitutional basis to be issued by September 16, which was backed up by the UNSMIL as it goes in line with Ghassan Salame’s action plan.
