The European Union's technical mission on migration governance has begun its second visit to Libya, focusing on collaborating with Libyan authorities on key migration issues, with a strong emphasis on human rights.
Talks in Tripoli with relevant stakeholders, as reported by EU Ambassador Nicola Orlando, were productive. A key area of discussion was exploring alternatives to detention, particularly for vulnerable individuals like children.
The EU delegation also discussed technical aspects of facilitating voluntary returns of migrants. Additionally, they emphasized the need to improve living conditions for migrants and refugees, including those currently detained. This includes strengthening access for UN agencies to detention centers and landing points.
The mission highlighted the importance of supporting humane border management practices that prioritize human rights, including enhancing capabilities for saving lives at sea and in deserts, as well as jointly combating human smuggling and trafficking.
The EU acknowledged the progress made by Libyan authorities and their willingness to strengthen the partnership. Ambassador Orlando also stressed the EU's expectations for continued cooperation, particularly in the upcoming Mediterranean Migration Forum scheduled for Tripoli.
