The Libyan Deputy Defense Minister Abdul Salam Al-Zoubi held an extensive meeting with the ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Libya, Nicola Orlando, and discussed several issues of mutual interest.

According to the Libyan Ministry of Defense, Orlando welcomed the ministry’s proposed vision and practical steps to reorganize and activate the Border Guard and Coast Guard departments in coordination with the General Staff.

Orlando described his meeting with Al-Zoubi as excellent. According to a statement from the EU Mission, they discussed the latest developments regarding ongoing operations and joint efforts to enhance effective border monitoring to combat smuggling and human trafficking.

The EU mission also said that Orlando briefed Al-Zoubi on the Rome meeting with the 5+5 Joint Military Committee, ongoing dialogue with the EU’s Operation “IRINI,” and his work operations in Benghazi. Orlando also stressed the EU’s support for implementing the ceasefire agreement and unifying Libya’s military institution in close coordination with the United Nations and other partners.

On last Sunday, Orlando met with Khalifa Haftar to discuss current developments and the EU’s potential role in resolving Libya’s political crisis and divisions while maintaining stability.
