The Libyan coastguards and Navy forces finished Monday the first phase of their training program onboard the Dutch ship, Rotterdam.

The Libyan coastguards have been part of a European Union training program with Operation Sophia.

The coastguards received training on how to deal with fires and avoid damages aboard ships and on how to board the ships and carry inspections onboard dubious ships.

Operation Sophia began training the Libyan coastguards and navy forces a month ago upon a Libyan authorities’ request, aiming to step up their abilities in hindering human trafficking and smuggling off the Libyan coast.

By the end of the program, the trainees should also be able to carry out search and rescue operations, which presumably will save the lives of many immigrants, and help better the security in the Libyan territorial water.
