The Ministry of Economy and Trade denied on Wednesday that an official decision had been issued to impose taxes on imported goods.

The ministry said in a statement that what is being circulated on social media regarding the imposition of a tax on imported goods "is nothing more than a proposal studied at the request of a number of factory owners within the framework of protecting Libyan industry and local products from the phenomenon of dumping."

It added that the proposal has been referred to the Prime Minister's Office for consideration as part of a study of economic policies, but no official decision has yet been made.

It stressed that currently, there is no intention, given the current circumstances facing the country, to impose new taxes on imported goods. It called on citizens to obtain information from official sources and to be accurate before circulating news, as it put it.
