The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, announced that Italy, France and Germany intend to chair a high-level event on Libya on the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly next week in New York city, stressing the relevance for Libya to hold the elections as scheduled in December.

Di Maio said, in an interview with La Repubblica newspaper on Friday, “We are extremely concerned about the constriction of time, considering the Libyan players appear to be unable to reach an agreement on the electoral law and the issue of the budget.”

He further noted that the elections scheduled for December 24 are called for by the Libyan people themselves, who are desperate to return to normal life, whilst warning that a failure to hold elections could very easily expose the country to a new phase of violence and instability.
