Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio says that a parallel government in Libya puts Italian interests at stake and complicates relations with Libya.

In correspondence with the committees of the Italian foreign and defence ministries, Di Maio reiterated that Libya remains one of the top priorities of Italian foreign policy, saying that "Stability in Libya means stability in the Mediterranean."

He emphasized the need to appoint a new UN envoy to Libya as soon as possible and referred to former Algerian Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum, who was nominated by the UN Secretary-General to succeed the US Stephani Williams.

"For Italy, it is essential to have a special envoy who is fully aware and able to mediate between the parties," Di Maio said.
