The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) revealed on Friday that a third of the population of the Arab world lives below the poverty line, despite the accelerating pace of growth.

In its annual report entitled “Survey of Economic and Social Developments in the Arab Region,” ESCWA found that the level of poverty increased in 2022 compared to previous years.

The report indicated that 130 million people, or a third of the region's population, are currently living below the poverty line (with the exception of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Libya), and these numbers are likely to increase during the next two years, according to the Commission.
