A spokesman for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Jean Alam, said that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, had received a letter from the head of UNSMIL, Ghassan Salame, which indicated his intention to step down from his position as the special representative in Libya.

Alam added, in a press statement, that Guterres remarked that he had full confidence in Salame’s work and the enormous effort he has made to bring peace to Libya.

Guterres made it clear that he would hold discussions with Salame on methods to ensure a smoother transition regarding UNSMIL’s leadership in order to maintain the progress achieved so far in Libya.
