Libya has congratulated Italy on the occasion of Italy's Republic Day, which falls on the second of June.

"The Foreign Mistry offers its sincere congratulations and best wishes to Italy on the occasion of the Republic Day," a readout by Libya's Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

Republic Day in Italy commemorates the Italian constitutional referendum, which took place in 1946, to decide on the form of government in the country after World War II and the fall of Italian fascism.

The referendum resulted in the victory of the Republic option by 54.3%, compared to 45.7% for the monarchy. As a result, the Court of Cassation declared the establishment of the Italian Republic after 85 years of monarchy.
