Authorities in the Oil Crescent region have urged camel owners to keep watch over their animals when grazing and prevent them from going stray.

Stray animals, camels in particular, along roads and highways are becoming a growing concern for motorists in Umm Al-Gharaniq, Al-Aqila, Bishr, and Ras Lanuf, as several accidents have occurred as a direct result of vehicles colliding with animals.

Careless animal owners could face a fine of up to 1,000 dinars for violating animal protection laws.

"The law stipulates that anyone who violates the provisions of Article III or leaves animals near the public road at a distance under one hundred meters shall be punished with a fine of not less than 500 dinars and not exceeding 1,000 dinars," a security official, Colonel Saleh Younes said.

According to Law No. 15 of 1989, concerned with protecting trees and animals, the Agricultural Police and the Municipal Guard are responsible for handling such issues.

The directorate expressed its readiness to cooperate with all relevant authorities to minimize this phenomenon that poses a threat to many road users.
