200 UN soldiers to arrive in Tripoli for security of UNSMIL’s HQ
The UNSMIL’s spokesperson, Sawsan Ghousha, confirmed on Sunday that a security unit will be sent to Libya in order to secure the UNSMIL headquarters in the Libyan capital before arrival of the staff in full to the country.
Currently, the UNSMIL is based in the Tunisian capital over security uncertainties in Libya.
Ghousha told Alnabaa TV Channel on the phone that the unit will consist of 200 UN soldiers.
“The security mission is an ordinary procedure in all UN missions and its aim is securing the headquarters,” She added, stressing that it is not a peacekeeping mission as several media outlets reported.
“Peacekeeping needs a resolution by the UN Security Council.” Ghousah remarked, saying the UNSMIL is a political mission and has nothing to do with the peacekeepers.
According to Alnabaa TV Channel, 200 UN soldiers from Nepal will arrive in Tripoli on September 27 via Mitiga Airport in Tripoli onboard a Jordanian airliner.
