The African Union (AU) has activated an incident management mechanism against the backdrop of the recent floodings that hit eastern Libya.
In a statement Sunday, the AU explained that the mechanism provides for conducting regular meetings with Libya's Permanent Mission to the AU in Addis Ababa.
The block also revealed a plan to deploy a team of experts from various departments to support Libya's ongoing response efforts to contain the flood crisis.
According to the statement, the team will include officials from the Departments of Agriculture, Rural Development, Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy, Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), Department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
The AU underscored that the step is part of its support to national response efforts in Libya, as it conveyed the "sincere condolences and solidarity" of Mousa Faki, Chairperson of the AU, with the Libyan people and commended "the humanitarian actors and volunteers for their tireless response efforts."
The AU head also renewed his call to Member States and international partners to urgently support the Libyan people in addressing their growing humanitarian needs following the devastation caused by Storm Daniel.
