UNICEF has said that children are the most affected by the floods resulting from Storm Daniel that swept the city of Derna and Jabal Al-Akhdar region in east Libya last September.

As a response to the floods, a Child Protection Rapid Assessment was conducted. In the rapid assessment, 180 adults were surveyed. Of these 180 adults who were surveyed, 67 percent reported that they had noticed changes in children’s behaviours since the floods. While 48 percent of the adults surveyed reported they had observed children experiencing psychological distress because of the floods, which suggests children may be in need of continued mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS).

UNICEF added that they had reached 71,830 children (11,610 children were reached directly by 16 mobile teams through child-friendly spaces, schools, and in the community and 60220 children were reached through the distribution of recreational and ECD kits which were distributed to schools, SSF institutions, and safe spaces in affected areas.
