The Prime Minister-elect from the House of Representatives (HoR), Fathi Bashagha, has stated that he is confident that the Government of National Unity (GNU) headed by Abdel Hamid Dbeibah will respect democratic principles and the peaceful transfer of power.

This came during a press conference held by Bashagha, at Mitiga International Airport upon his arrival in Tripoli late Friday night, after he was chosen as Prime Minister by the HoR in Tobruk.

Bashagha praised the GNU, considering that Dbeibah assumed his responsibilities in a difficult period.

Regarding the international role in the country, Bashagha said “we thank the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for its efforts and we look forward to positive cooperation and joint work with it."

Bashagha described his selection as head of the government as sacred trust, stressing that he is with the parliament and the state, and "no government can succeed without cooperation and joint work with the legislative authority."

The HoR chose on Thursday Bashagha as the new Prime Minister and assigned him to form a government within 15 days to present it to the HoR to gain confidence.
