Libya’s renegade General Khalifa Haftar declared on Wednesday full control over the war-torn city of Benghazi after more than three years of fighting that left thousands of people dead and others displaced.

In a short televised speech to his supporters, Khalifa Haftar said the victory of his armed groups over the “terrorists” in Benghazi was complete and undeniable.

In their final offensive on Sabri and Kharbiesh neighborhoods, Dignity Operation gained unlimited ground and air support from UAE and Egyptian forces. Sources from Benghazi Shura Council said they had decided to withdraw from their last strongholds in the city due to the intense airstrikes and shelling.

Khalifa Haftar thanked in his address what he called “the brotherly and friendly countries” for backing his forces in its war in Benghazi.

Dignity Operation sources said over 5000 of their militants were killed in the Benghazi war.
