Activists circulated videos on Sunday of cases of torture and violations against detainees, which they said were inside Garnada prison, south of the city of Shahat in eastern Libya.
The circulated videos showed cases of individual and group torture of detainees as they screamed inside the prison under the authority of Khalifa Haftar.
According to former prisoners in Garnada prison, detainees are subjected to electric shocks to various parts of their bodies, in addition to being repeatedly deprived of sleep and of decent food and drink for long periods, which leads to the deterioration of their health.
Garnada prison is a place to detain political prisoners who oppose Haftar, and human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned the violations inside the prison, calling for an immediate and independent investigation, and for holding those responsible for these crimes accountable.
In March 2022, Human Rights Watch revealed abuse, beatings, and torture inside the prison.
In December of last year 2024, Mohammed Al-Shabah, the spokesman for the Ministry of Justice in the parallel government in eastern Libya, denied the existence of cases of torture of detainees inside the prison, and called on international organizations to visit it.
