The Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development is working with UNESCO to have traditional dishes and archaeological sites recognized on the World Heritage List.
Minister Mabrouka Toghi met with Eric Falt, UNESCO’s regional director for the Maghreb, to discuss proposals. Among the cultural treasures under consideration are iconic Libyan dishes such as Bazeen, Fatat, Mbakbaka, and Couscous, alongside historic landmarks like Qasr Kabaw, Villa Silin,
Al-Bayda Sanusiya Zawiya, and others, which are currently listed under the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO).
Faraj Al-Shaqar, a spokesperson for the ministry, revealed plans to register the "millstone" as a heritage item, adding that bazeen, a winter favorite in Libya, is a strong contender.
The ministry aims to highlight both tangible and intangible aspects of Libyan heritage, collaborating closely with UNESCO experts to prepare comprehensive nominations.
The initiative also includes training programs to ensure effective management and preservation of cultural heritage.
