The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has attributed the recent increase in respiratory illness cases to seasonal viruses, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and common childhood pneumonia.

In a statement, the NCDC said these illnesses are spreading in a typical seasonal pattern, with severity ranging from mild to moderate. Severe cases are primarily affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and children.

The centre confirmed that analysis of patient samples from hospitals and health centers showed most infections were caused by seasonal influenza, with many linked to bacterial infections.

The NCDC expects flu cases to rise in the coming weeks, potentially increasing hospital admissions. It urged the public to take preventive measures, including flu vaccinations, which are available nationwide.

The increase in respiratory infections has been notable since the start of October, according to the NCDC.
