The Undersecretary of the Italian Interior Ministry, Nicola Molteni, said that Libya is not a safe place for illegal immigrants and those intercepted at sea should not be returned there.

The leader of the Italian League Party -a partner in the ruling coalition- said that the disembarking points be equipped for conducting repatriation or expulsion operations or establishing reception centres for refugee applications.

"When I think of a safe country outside the borders of the European Union, and then a safe third country, where there is respect for basic rights, it is clear that I am not thinking of Libya," the Italian official added.
